Why Yurga is Called So: Versions

The name “Yurga” is a mystery with several answers.

There were many versions:

• Selkup — “fat river” (in spring the banks turned yellow from buttercups);
• “pacer” or “small horse trot” — in Tatar interpretations;
• and the most convincing modern version: Turkic origin, “fast river”.

Anyone who has seen Yurginka in spring understands: this name perfectly captures its character. Lively, noisy, “talkative” — the river gave its name to the place, and the place to the future city.
